Mike Shinoda: ‘I lost direction when Chester Bennington passed away’

Rapper Mike Shinoda said he buried himself in music to forget his best friend’s death.

Mike Shinoda has just announced that he will release his solo album Post Traumatic on June 15. Post Traumatic includes 16 songs, released by Warner Bros. Mike Shinoda has released two MVs from the album, Crossing a Line and Nothing Makes Sense Anymore.

The male singer calls the process of completing the new album “a journey out of sadness and darkness”. “Over the past seven months, my emotions have gone up and down like a roller coaster. When I was a child, when faced with difficult things, I always turned to art. When Chester passed away, in the first week, I completely disoriented. I realized that I could not avoid it and was forced to face that scary emotion for a long time,” Mike Shinoda said.

He chatted with producer Rick Rubin. He advised him to work to forget his sadness. About eight days after Chester died, he went into the studio. “I felt like I was escaping from reality. I spent half a day here, in the dark. The first song I recorded was Place to Start,” the rapper confided.

Mike Shinoda said the songs in his new album are quite heavy and dark. “I needed to express these feelings. My fans shared with me how heartbroken they were. I felt it was my responsibility to convey those things. I didn’t want these feelings to sink in and disappear. I want them to know that I was there and listened to it all.”

Mike Shinoda also shared that many fans often ask about the band’s future direction. But he couldn’t say anything because the members didn’t have an answer yet. He wants to convey true stories and emotions through music instead of following the market.
