Erik ten Hag has once again made it clear that the Manchester United hierarchy will have the final say on whether Mason Greenwood has a future at the club , but it is not up to him.

Greenwood, 21, has not played for MU since January 2022 and the club is currently conducting an internal investigation with the striker. In February, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all criminal charges against Greenwood, including one count of attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behavior and one count of assault cause harm to the body.

MU has suspended Greenwood internally after that accusation from January 2022 until now, even though Greenwood was acquitted by the court in February this year. Speculation about Greenwood’s future at MU has been rife since then, with MU insiders said to be divided over the possibility of the striker returning to play for the Old Trafford team.

Ten Hag has not worked with Greenwood since the Dutch teacher was appointed as MU head coach last summer. Now, Ten Hag was asked by the media about Greenwood’s future during a press conference before the friendly match between MU and Arsenal in the US.

Ten Hag insists the decision on Greenwood’s future will be made by the club’s chief executives, although he has shared his views. Notably, Greenwood is still not on MU’s pre-season tour list at this time.

“It’s the club’s decision. Of course, I said my ideas and opinions, but it’s the club’s decision. We all have to accept it,” Erik Ten Hag said.

Recent information from international media said that MU is planning to loan Greenwood. Greenwood is likely to come to Atalanta as part of a plan to help MU buy 20-year-old Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund. However, Atalanta have made it clear that they are only interested in a cash deal if Hojlund leaves the club this summer.

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney recently urged Greenwood to leave Old Trafford and pursue a fresh start. When asked about Greenwood’s current situation at MU, Rooney told The Athletic (UK): “That puts Mason Greenwood in a deadlock situation. So for Mason Greenwood, it’s a terrible position because I’m sure he just wants to play football.

But for MU, the club’s image and ensuring they make the right decisions, it is almost a “catch 22”. I think the best thing for Mason Greenwood now is to leave the club and develop somewhere else. Greenwood needs to get back playing because he hasn’t played for a long time.

Given all that has happened and the internal investigation that has dragged on, perhaps Mason Greenwood now just needs to get on the field and try to get his career back on track.
