When Antonio Rudiger isn’t happy, he doesn’t mind letting people know about it

Antonio Rudiger openly expresses his dissatisfaction.

Despite Germany’s 1-0 lead at half-time in their Euro 2024 match against Hungary in Stuttgart, the Real Madrid defender expressed his concerns to a member of the coaching staff. Germany went on to win 2-0 and advance to the final 16 with a game to spare. After defeating Scotland in the tournament opener, Germany took the lead with a close-range finish by Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich, who was set up by Ilkay Gundogan.

However, Manuel Neuer was called into action on several times and made two outstanding saves, one from a Dominik Szoboszlai freekick that elicited wild applause from the home crowd and large celebrations on the bench.

On the stroke of half-time, Neuer produced another excellent save; Szoboszlai’s freekick from the left curled inwards and appeared to be heading inside the far post until Neuer saved it. However, the Freiburg attacker, Roland Salloi, was on hand to convert the rebound.

Unfortunately, Salloi was offside. The linesman raised his flag, and the video assistant referee affirmed. It was a letdown for the hosts. He grabbed a member of the Germany coaching staff, angrily pointing at the back where the initial header had been won, and Arsenal striker Kai Havertz, who had missed the initial header that Neuer had saved.

Rudiger’s complaint was that the Germans attempted to maintain a firm line on the edge of their own penalty area. However, Havertz believed he had dropped deep too fast and failed to hold the line, forcing Neuer to make the excellent save. If he had been unable to, it would have counted. It was not the easiest game for Havertz to participate in, given how well Hungary was doing. The pass was always a little late, and his movement was perhaps a yard slower than it should have been.

There was limited space in the core regions for him, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Ilkay Gundogan to work. As a result, just shy of an hour in, his evening came to an end, with Niclas Fullkrug taking his place at the point of the German attack.

Germany became the first team to qualify for the round of 16, with goals from captain Gundogan and Musiala in the 67th minute securing victory.
