Villarreal has announced the signing of Nicolas Pepe.

The winger moved to Arsenal from Lille in 2019 for a then-club record £72 million.

However, he had a rough time at Arsenal and departed the club after 112 games and 27 goals.

Pepe spent time on loan at Nice before his contract with Arsenal was terminated by mutual consent a year early.

Pepe spent the season with Trabzonspor, where he scored six goals in 23 appearances.

The winger revealed he considered retiring due to the criticism he faced when at Arsenal

The winger said that he pondered quitting owing to the criticism he received while at Arsenal.

Pepe previously said that he pondered retirement owing to the ‘wave of criticism’ he had while at Arsenal.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Pepe stated: “It was almost harassment.” I don’t spend much time on social media, but if my brother told me, “This is what they said about you,” it would have an unconscious impact on me.

‘It also came from the media or some members of the club. They are unaware that it can have an impact on mental health, family relationships, and performance.

‘The only ones who have always supported me are Arsenal supporters.

‘At Arsenal, I went through a traumatic experience, as if my passion had been taken from me; I despised football. I doubted myself to the point where I considered quitting everything.

I pondered how they could be so unrelenting in their attacks on me. They even referred to me as the biggest flop in Premier League history. But I refused to mope.
