Arsenal scored second-half goals from supersubs Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey to avenge their defeat to Villa, who had previously beaten them twice.

However, manager Michael Arteta said that goalkeeper Raya’s “magic” save from Watkins’ header “changed the whole game”.

Raya, 28, was initially stuck as Amadou Onana’s deflected shot looped over him and fortunately hit the crossbar.

Watkins scored from close range after the ball bounced.

But the Arsenal goalkeeper managed to put out an arm and make a stunning save while simultaneously pushing the ball away from danger.

Raya, the man of the match, stated, “It’s one of those where you don’t know how you did it.” It’s a great save.

“I was on the floor and saw the rebound coming for Ollie, so I attempted to get up as quickly as possible.

“It’s nice to know that all your hard work has paid off.

“It’s an important moment. They had their chances, and I was able to save Ollie’s header.

“Everyone’s a hero. We work together; I’m not the only one saving. Leo and Thomas scored.

“You have to fight and dig deep and we did.”

And Arteta remarked, “David made an unbelievable save, and it was the game’s magic moment.”

“David’s save changed the whole game.”

Fans celebrated the Spaniard’s efforts on social media.

One wrote, “I’ve been watching Arsenal most of my life; that was the best save I’ve ever seen.”

A second commented, “Raya, that’s the best save I’ve ever seen.”

A third commented, “Raya’s save of the season already.”

Someone suggested sending Raya extra money right away.

While a fifth said, “That Raya save is one of the best I’ve ever seen.” Jesus Christ.

With his first touch, substitute Trossard opened the scoring in the 67th minute.

Ten minutes later, midfielder Partey added a second, slipping a 20-yard strike over Emi Martinez’s left hand.

Trossard expressed frustration at not starting due to Arteta’s preference for Gabriel Martinelli on the left wing, despite his goal.

The 29-year-old Belgian stated that “everyone wants to start.” When you score, it’s almost as if you don’t understand what’s going on.

“I usually try to change the game, and it worked out well for me and the team.

“I understand the competition. When you perform really well, everyone wants to play games.

“David kept us in the game and it was great that we finished it off.”

Arteta praised Trossard for his effect, saying, “He’s upset when he doesn’t play, upset when he comes on the pitch, but he still gives you what you need. “He’s a great example for others.”

Villa manager Unai Emery stated: “It was a test to understand who we are.” We could have won.

“We created three pretty nice opportunities. “I am proud.”
