Ruud van Nistelrooy, his assistant, will cover as temporary manager throughout the hiring process.

The club said: “Erik ten Hag has departed his post as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

Appointed in April 2022, Erik guided the team to two domestic medals: the FA Cup in 2024 and the Carabao Cup in 2023.

“We wish Erik well for the future and appreciate all he has done throughout his time with us.

Supported by the present coaching team, “Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach; a permanent head coach is being sought.”

Man Utd lost 2-1 to West Ham on Sunday, finding themselves in the bottom half of the Prem table.

With four losses and two draws, the Red Devils have just won three of nine league games thus far this season.

Under the Dutchman, United representatives believed there lacked impetus and development, which SunSport understands.

They also think that throughout the past year, performances and outcomes have not been sufficient.

Uncertainties started to surface over Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford earlier this year.

But after guiding United to FA Cup triumph at Wembley Stadium, the 54-year-old was awarded a one-year contract extension in July.

He then spent around £200 million in the transfer market to improve his team, only to have the worst start to a Premier League campaign for the club.

This season the Red Devils have also suffered in Europe.

With three points from three games, they are rank twenty-one in the Europa League group stage table.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been strongly connected to the position.

However, he lately asserted he will not oversee or mentor another club in the next year.

Ex-Barcelona manager Xavi has also been mentioned as likely Ten Hag replacement.

Last week’s reports indicated Man Utd got in touch with him over the position.

Initially, United chiefs set their No1 goal as former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.

But the FA grabbed him this month, and he chose the next England manager.

Man Utd next Wednesday at Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

Then the Red Devils have to play Chelsea in a big Prem showdown this weekend.
