Gabriel’s message to Viktor Gyokeres and four other things you may have missed from Sporting CP vs Arsenal
Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Champions League with a dominant 5-1 victory against Sporting CP.The Gunners had to wait a long time to secure a win away from home in Europe, which Mikel Arteta’s side did in style in Lisbon.
WHAT HAPPENED?Arsenal ran riot in the first half of their Champions League fixture against Sporting CP, racing into a 3-0 lead before the interval. Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring in the opening 10 minutes before Kai Havertz added a second. And on the verge of half-time, defender Gabriel scored a third, and celebrated in cheeky fashion.
THE BIGGER PICTUREGabriel ran off and put his hands over his face, in what appeared to be a nod towards Gyokeres’ famed celebration, in which he covers his mouth with clasped hands – though in this instance, the defender put them over his eyes instead. Gyokeres was uncharacteristically quiet in the first half, despite scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City earlier this season.
DID YOU KNOW?Gabriel has now scored three goals this season, having also found the net against both Tottenham and Manchester City in the Premier League. Last season, he scored four times, so two more strikes would see him sail past last term’s tally.
WHAT NEXT?Arsenal play West Ham in a high-stakes London derby this weekend. The Gunners are currently fourth in the Premier League table, nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
