Arsenal were linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko this summer – before the Slovenia striker decided to sign a new five-year contract with RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen has sparked Premier League interest in his teammate Benjamin Sesko by calling him “the best striker” he’s ever played with, ahead of their Champions League clash with Aston Villa.

The Slovenian forward was a key target for Arsenal and Chelsea during the summer transfer window as both clubs sought to bolster their attacking options.

Despite this interest, Sesko extended his contract with Leipzig until 2029, opting to stay after impressing at the European Championship with Slovenia. The club described the 21-year-old as perfectly embodying their “DNA and playing philosophy.”

According to Mail Sport, Sesko was cautious about joining Arsenal due to concerns about competing with Kai Havertz for a starting role, with no guarantees he would displace the German international.

Poulsen’s glowing praise ahead of the match could reignite European clubs’ interest in the young talent. Speaking to TNT Sports, Poulsen said:

“As a striker, he’s the best I’ve played with. He has everything a top number 9 needs—strength, shooting, technique. He’s still young and learning the finesse of the game, but he’ll score a lot for us and eventually find the club he loves.”

Sesko is thought to have been hesitant of a move to Arsenal over fears he would not be able to push Kai Havertz out of the starting XI

Leipzig has built a reputation as a stepping stone for European talents, with stars like Dominik Szoboszlai, Josko Gvardiol, and Christopher Nkunku moving to Premier League clubs ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Arsenal reportedly continues to monitor Sesko, whose buyout clause is set at £55 million. A strong start to the current campaign, with nine goals and three assists across all competitions, has further heightened interest.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose will rely on Sesko’s form to boost the team’s Champions League prospects as the league phase nears its end. The Bundesliga side currently sits comfortably in a knockout-stage position with two matchdays remaining.

Mikel Arteta's side are still thought to be keeping tabs on the striker over the next two windows
